I Saved The World From Global Warming!

Not only has it been a while since Kyle or I have posted anything on here, but it also has been a long, long time since we worked on the movie I Saved The World From Global Warming! together. Co-created by Kyle and colleague Nolan Wang, this comedy has a little flourish of some T.U.F.C. humor and illustration-work. (Kyle and Nolan were gracious enough to invite me to animate certain sections of the film). I won’t say much more about it, as Kyle is the real authority behind the film.

This weekend I Saved The World From Global Warming! is playing in a Seattle film festival, and I couldn’t make it. In debt to Kyle, I thought I would try to make up for missing the screening by posting about it here. So watch the trailer above, and check out the myspace page for the film. There’s tons of info about it there.

Good luck in Seattle guys!

Reflections on 2008: Kent St. John and Crooked Creek, Volume 1

We asked you to tell us your favorite TUFC piece from 2008, and now it’s our turn to answer the question. We’ve both picked pieces that made an impact on us, and have included little essays as to why we chose them. Remember to VOTE in our poll so that you have a chance to win a signed print! Enjoy!

It took me one split second to decide on this. The very first Crooked Creek post still resides as my favorite TUFC post to date. To me this post marks a point in the blog where Kyle and I decided to take things up a notch. All of sudden Kyle’s writing revealed the beginning of something larger than our normal, one-off posts. It was interesting to sit back and take in the writing, picking up on the entire “world” that was being created, vs. something that is smaller and less encompassing. With that in mind, it felt natural to me to expand my illustration work, and try to shoot for something a little more intense, and a little more detailed with more time spent on it.

It was also exciting to start something that has become an ongoing installment for the site. Up until Crooked Creek was started, we were only making conventional single-entry posts.  To work on something that has a future with developing characters, changing environments and a whole world that is taking shape, it is very motivating to create a visual story.

The different ways Crooked Creek can manifest itself are amazing as well. We hope to create a book sometime in the future when the story is finished, and currently Kyle and I are working with my brother, Adam St. John, on making a soundtrack to go along with the story. Combining different methods of creativity and exploring different avenues of expressing those creations this is what we’re all about.

OH CANADA! (Ode to Kyle)

Well ladies and gents. Our Mr. Kyle Dickinson has left the country for a few days. He’s made his way up north to help film some sort of documentary. In honor of his venture, I give you this:

click image to make it extra large for your ultimate viewing pleasure.

Just a note, that’s suppose to be Kyle, decked out in his Royal Canadian Mounted Police garb, along with his trusty moose, which allows Kyle to mount him everyday. In spirit behind him is the ever-present rock drum God, Neil Peart, from the legendary Canadian rock band, Rush. We do it up right here, on The Unlimited Freedom Castle: Epic, Sick, Awesome, and Sick.

Peace out,

-Kent

Work from the show

Hey everyone. Here’s a fresh post for ya. This is our work from the show, almost displayed here on the blog the way it was hung. The only difference are the two pieces on the end (“Fleeing the Mountainside” and “SLINK, SLUNK”) were not stacked together the way they are here. The first two sets were made the way we make the blog. An illustration by me, then Kyle writes something in response. Then the other way around for the second set. The last two pieces were a little different. We decided to switch it up a little and let the audience take part. People that visited the gallery were able to write responses to my illustration, as well as draw responses to Kyle’s writing. To see the submissions from the show, take a look at the post prior to this one.

This pretty much concludes all of our “show” posts. Kyle and I are excited to get back on the blog with a new Crooked Creek installment. Up next will be Kyle’s comeback post. Thanks for staying with us!

SHOW SUBMISSIONS

After one month, The Unlimited Freedom Castle returns to the web. Sorry for the hiatus. We’ve had a lot going on, not to mention Mr. Kyle himself is currently moving-in to Eugene Oregon.

Below you’ll see the submissions from our show. Here’s a little recap on what this is exactly: Last month we opened our show on first Thursday, August 7th. If you were there, thank you for coming! We had a great time. Lots of people were streaming through the small gallery during the evening and into the night.  Even a few took a moment to interact and submit either a drawing or a piece of writing in reaction to either my illustration, or Kyle’s writing – or both.

So here they are. The submissions from the show. The first group are the drawings that were made in reaction to Kyle’s writing (“Slink. Slunk….” which you can read directly below). Then the group below that were the submissions in reaction to my illustration (which you can also view directly above). Thanks to all who submitted work!

ILLUSTRATION SUBMISSIONS:

Kyle’s writing:

Slink.

Slunk.

Heels drag as footsteps trudge.

Your world is fueled by that which you dream of, and you dream yourself as God.

You are a hapless god, and the world – your world – is a shoddy, last-second, popsicle-stick failure, under your guide.  The effort you employ is only enough to keep you fed.  At your feet the masses huddle and worship a creator who doesn’t care.  Still, your fat fingers tap tap tap on the armrest of your throne, and a billion people offer up a golden crown, and place it upon your head.  It fits nicely, you think, and you hum yourself a tune that gets caught in your throat full of sludge and sacrificial bones.  Silvery drool drips from your chin and you call it a flood as it engulfs a dozen of your denizens making base camp on your lap, hoping to one day stand upon your shoulders and gaze upon the stubble rounding out your bulbous neck.

You proclaim “this is good”.

“The world is good”.

But you don’t see the spiral you create.  You are the eye of the hurricane that bulldozes and bends from shanty towns to skyscrapers.  With no end in sight, you are blind to the burden you have become.

Slink.

Slunk.

Also, stay tuned people! Kyle and I will be making a couple new posts very, very soon. Up next: The work that was shown last month at our show, and after that we’ll be back on track with a little Crooked Creek action.

Upcoming T.U.F.C. Illustration Preview

Hey everyone. Our show is approaching. This past weekend I finished-up the final illustration piece, so now all of them are finished. I thought I’d post a little preview of each image. These are tight crops of the final pieces that will be shown at ON Gallery in Portland, OR., August 7th. If you need some more information on the show, check out the two posts before this one.

By the way, Kyle’s making a giant leap up north today. He’s making his way back to Oregon after living in SoCal for the past few years (I think it’s been 5 years). Bon Voyage, Kyle.

Out of Commission

"Out of Commission" Illustration by Kent St. John

Considering that Kyle and I might be “out of commission” for a week or so, I thought I’d just throw up a quick post. The image above was originally a sketch from one of my books.

There’s nothing worse than a neglected blog, but Kyle and I are doing our best to keep in contact, and let you know what’s going on. If you’ve check out the post previous to this one, you know that we’re busy preparing for The Unlimited Freedom Castle gallery debut. Just yesterday I sent out the official press release for the show. Check it out, and come see the show in August if you’re in the Portland area. The official opening is First Thursday, August 7th at ON Gallery.

THE UNLIMITED FREEDOM CASTLE: “WRITTEN BY / ILLUSTRATED BY” PRESS RELEASE:

On April fools days, 2008, the first collaborative post by Kyle Dickinson and Kent St. John went live on their blog, “The Unlimited Freedom Castle.” However, this wasn’t the beginning of any fooling around. A whole four months later, Kent and Kyle have gone on to create thirty five more wholesome posts, with a handful still waiting in the wings to be published.

The Unlimited Freedom Castle is just what it sounds like: a place where imagination reigns supreme. This blog is essentially a creative outlet for its two creators, Kent and Kyle. One is an artist, the other a writer. On this site they combine their talents to see what happens. The purpose is to see where the imagination will go.

About the show:

“Written By / Illustrated By”
With the routine blogging well under their belts, Kent and Kyle have decided to take The Unlimited Freedom Castle to a new and different level: the gallery. This two man show will feature writing inspired by art, and art inspired by writing, very much in the way the blog functions. In addition to just showing their work, the viewer will have the opportunity to interact and contribute as well by either writing in reaction to Kent’s illustration, or illustrating in reaction to Kyle’s writing– or both. When the show comes down at the end of August, the viewers’ contributions will be published on The Unlimited Freedom Castle blog.

“Fierce” Illustration Friday Post #1

“Fierce” Illustration by Kent St. John

Hey everyone. Here’s my first entry for this week’s www.illustrationfriday.com topic; “fierce.” Hopefully many more entries to follow… at least that is the plan. The movie Amores Perros (directed by Alejandro González) came to mind right away. I’ve always thought of this film as being extremely “fierce” in every sense of the word.

-Kent

For those of you who may already frequent our blog, and are curious as to what Illustration Friday is exactly, read on brother:

Illustration Friday is a weekly creative outlet/participatory art exhibit for illustrators and artists of all skill levels. It was designed to challenge participants creatively. We believe that every person has a little creative bone in their body. Illustration Friday just gives a no-pressure, fun excuse to use it. No clients looking for a particular thing. No one judging the outcome of the work. It’s a chance to experiment and explore and play with visual art.

Get your daily dose of sketchbook to keep the scurvy away!

Hey everyone. Kent here. I’m finally back from my wedding and honeymoon. For anyone who is wondering, it turned out perfectly…literally perfect. While on the honeymoon, I managed to pickup a copy of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and read it while laying on the beach, etc. Naturally I had to start drawing some pirates. Watched a lot of Travel Channel as well, that’s why Andrew Zimmern makes an appearance in the third image down… however, I’m a much bigger fan of Anthony Bourdain.

It’s good to be back, and it’s good to get cranking on this here blog again. I hope all is well with you guys, thanks for staying tuned during my hiatus. Take care.
